I recently broke ground on a new barn. A neighbor stopped by to see what all the commotion was about. As I explained that I was building a new barn he asked, “How big is it going to be?” As I started to describe the dimensions, and before I could finish, he interrupted me by saying, “It’s not big enough!” What he was telling me was that no matter what size it was planned to be, it would still be too small. On a farm, you can always use more barn space
The same is true about information security. Even with a comprehensive security management program in place, a business can always benefit from pushing the envelope. It is not sufficient anymore to just have antivirus, antispam and a firewall in place. The sophistication of today’s hacker community demands a thorough and comprehensive program in place to address hundreds of different attack vectors. Data privacy and security should be one on your highest priorities.
While the motivation might be pretty clear for the recent successful attacks on the U.S. Government data sources, you may not see your business as a target. If this is the case, you’re absolutely dead wrong. The Hacker community is scanning the internet for any vulnerable resource in which to extract data that is marketable on the black market. This includes personal information about people and companies, financial data, sales data, and customer data. You are a target and the less secure your network, the more susceptible you are to a hack.
Don’t wait till you’re hacked. Build a bigger barn now.
